For many of us, it’s summer, the time we take to escape from the hubbub of working life. That means barbecues, pool parties, and best of all (if you ask my kids), no school! So, you might ask, “Melissa, why are you talking about learning?” Well, despite the lack of school for many of us, this is a great time to do a learning reset, and today I’ll talk all about the science of learning and why it’s so darn hard sometimes.
We are all lifelong learners. Regardless of whether we’re in school, job training, or any other formal education, we each are constantly learning. The sad part is that most of us are going about learning completely wrong.
Today I’ll talk about the three-step process of learning, and about some of the things we do to interrupt that vital process. I’ll also talk about some of the keys of deep learning and how most of us get it wrong. For example, most of us resist effortful learning. We like to take the path of least resistance, which is understandable. I’ll explain why resisting effort when it comes to learning is disastrous and how to make learning more effective so you can actually retain what you are trying to stuff in your head! Makes sense, doesn’t it?
After discussing the issues we create for ourselves when learning, I’ll take a deep dive into a few solutions for you to improve your learning. If there’s anything you can understand from this podcast and the solutions I’ll share, it’s that learning isn’t so much about being smart, as it is about being smart about learning. That may sounds confusing, but I think it’ll make a lot of sense as you listen to the podcast.
