Have you ever found yourself in a room with a group of people you find to be talented, intelligent, hard-working, or otherwise impressive, and thought “I don’t belong here?” If you have, you may be experiencing Imposter Syndrome, and today I’m here to share what it is, why we experience it, and how to overcome it!
I would guess that most, if not all of us, have experienced feelings of inadequacy and doubt, we have asked ourselves, “what have I gotten myself into” and ” can I even be successful.” The unfortunate thing is, often times we feel this even when we are qualified and experienced enough for the situations we find ourselves in. This Imposter Syndrome holds you and me back from giving our all and doing our absolute best.
Imposter Syndrome is defined as “a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments.” What does this look like for you and me? It means that despite evidence, both internal and external, of our accomplishments and merit for being where we are, we still believe we are not qualified. Individuals will often chalk up their success to luck, good timing, or an overestimation of their skill level by their peers or mentors.
It’s important to note that there is a significant difference between being humble, and struggling with imposter syndrome. Being humble, or not letting ego control actions, doesn’t limit an individual from being aware of and recognizing their own talent or skill. The key with humility is not letting accomplishments get in the way of making the right decisions.
In this episode I hope to be able to help you recognize imposter syndrome in yourself, educate you on the negative impact of imposter syndrome, and help you learn skills to overcome imposter syndrome to become a more confident leader.
