As is normal in our fast paced world, trends and various buzz words come and go. The business world is no different. For several years we’ve heard about Emotional Intelligence as a key to greater success in the work place. Recently it seems we’ve moved on from Emotional Intelligence and started talking about another term that I’m very happy to be hearing about: Psychological Safety.
Psychological safety is by no means a new thing. As a psychologist in my clinical practice I’ve been advocating for and helping to build psychological safety for couples and individuals for years. It’s exciting to see us talking about it in the world of work though, because it turns out that many of the needs we have at home are still needs at work. In order to be functional, relationships require kindness, respect, and working together to reach goals, whether at work or at home.
Today’s focus is on defining what psychological safety is, why it’s so important, and how to cultivate it as the foundation for a strong organizational culture.
