My heart is heavy. I’m sure many of yours are too. Whether it be growing arguments about the right way to handle COVID-19, discussions of race relations in America, or frustrations with handling quarantine, it feels like the common ground we may have once had is disappearing beneath our feet. The title of today’s podcast comes from Rumi, who has lessons for us all: “Beyond right and wrong there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
In today’s climate, I am not here to argue for a side, there is already far too much of that. I am here to talk about what you can do. There has been so much talk of widespread, sweeping reform of the way we live, and the way we handle things. This is not what I am here to talk about. I am here to talk about you. I’m talking micro, not macro. What can you do as an individual to make a positive difference in your leadership, family, and personal life?
Edmund Burke, the English statesmen, said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” What things are we not doing that allow discontent to grow? What are we doing to breed more discontent? The failure of civil discourse is one of my greatest concerns as it leads to a greater polarization among us.
Change doesn’t start on a macro level, at least not true change. It grows from the micro, from the individual, to the family, to the community, and out into greater society. I hope today you will consider how you can be a force for good and how you can contribute to civil discourse in a world on fire. I’ll meet you in the field.
