The Power of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a big buzz word these days, but what comes to mind when you hear that word? Perhaps you think of meditation, nature walks, or something similar. While all these ideas can be tied to mindfulness, they don’t quite fully capture what mindfulness is and the value it has for daily living.

So what is mindfulness? From Psychology Today, “Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present. This state encompasses observing one’s thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad.” This quote might be clarifying to some of you, but for others might not help at all. To help, I invited a special guest to help us understand this important, but sometimes confusing, subject.

This week I’m joined by Dr. Jared Warren, a licensed psychologist and associate professor of psychology at Brigham Young University. Jared  knows this topic inside and out. Not only does he teach classes on mindfulness, but he also dedicates great amounts of time researching and practicing mindfulness. He is known among students as being extremely “zen” which is really a great compliment and an essential quality to living a mindful life.

In this episode we address all the basics, including what is mindfulness, what is meditation, what is the difference, what are the benefits of mindfulness, and why would you want to consider a mindfulness practice.  We’ll also address the specific ways mindfulness has been found to shift our cognitive and emotional responses, and we’ll discuss the concept of psychological flexibility.  We’ve also got some excellent resources for you to get started on a mindfulness practice or to take your practice to the next level.

Finally, in addition to his professional work, Jared is a gifted photographer, and it was so great learning how his passion for both mindfulness and photography developed together.  You seriously have to check out his amazing photography!

I promise you won’t want to miss this one!
